People.Joomla.Org Progress Report

E-mail

What an amazing first month of a beta launch at People.Joomla.org, 3249 members and climbing.  So many opportunities for the Joomla community to network and socialize!

We are presently testing extensions and are very anxious to add more functionality to the site in preparation for an official launch.  At the moment we do not have a specific date set for the official launch.  More to come on this subject as we move along.

I have posted an explanation of the Community Managers as well as a list of the Community Managers presently working on the project in the News and Updates section of JPeople.  We are in need of many more bilingual CM's to cover the wide variety of languages spoken.

We appreciate everyone patience as we prepare for the official launch and look forward to your feedback.  There are a multitude of places to leave your comments such as the people.joomla.org forum and the Community Help Group.

What a Joomla! Week

E-mail

This past week has been just amazing for me, and a real reminder of how incredible, huge and diverse the Joomla! community is.

Last Saturday, I was at the Joomla! Day New England organized by the Joomla! Users Group New England. The setting was beautiful and the group enthusiastic. I heard great talks by Ryan, Joe LeBlanc and Ken Crowder. I also got to lead my own discussion of how to get involved in various parts of the Joomla! project. Here's a link to my slides, though I'm more of a discussion person than a slide person. What we talked about is how so much of getting involved is just "showing up." This has been my experience in many different volunteer efforts, whether a neighbourhood group, a congregation, a school or an open source project: taking a deep breath, overcoming the fears that go with entering a group where everyone seems to know each other, and rolling up your selves is what it takes. It is, indeed scary, and it's true that in most things like this, there is no instruction book beyond "come in and grab a broom."

Interview With Altansukh About Mongolian Government Websites

E-mail

About this Blog

This is the seventh in a series of blog posts about major Joomla websites and the developers who built them.

This week we're talking with Altansukh about his role in moving almost the entire Mongolian Government over to Joomla websites.

1) Welcome. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

AltansukhHi, thanks for the letting me to share our experiences with the community. I'm 33 and living in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. I have a banking degree, but I was so much into computers since my childhood so I ended up working in IT when I finished my university. Mostly worked as webmaster and web designer in early years of my career and then since 2003 I am working as IT Specialist at the USAID-funded project here in Mongolia. Enriched my experience with Cisco and Microsoft certification as I managed Cisco network and Windows 2003 server systems.

The main reason I work in IT is it constantly evolves and there is always something new. Almost every year there is something new to discover, learn and master. And it makes IT fairly challenging to work.

J&Beyond - a Joomla Conference with a Difference

E-mail

Last week in Wiesbaden, Germany 190 people from 27 different countries gathered together for three days of Joomla, Joomla and a little bit more Joomla.

The idea of this international gathering was several years in the making but after Joomla!Day Germany 2009 Robert Deutz was determined to make it happen and happen it did, in style.

This event was designed to be run by the participants. All the sessions were proposed and run by attendees and with over 55 sessions it was certainly going to be a challenge to attend everything that you wanted to. Thankfully almost every session was filmed and the videos will be available at JandBeyond.org over the next few weeks.

What was that about communication?

E-mail

The Joomla 1.6 Beta has been published, and now it's time for scrubbing and polishing.

I was already involved in the development of Joomla 1.5, but was only responsible for the template and had little influence on the code and the development process itself. This changed for 1.6: I have been far more intensely involved and have learned so much, particularly in the last few months.

The central theme for me within this project was and is communication.

Demand Media and Joomla

Demand Media is a company on a roll. The California-based company was founded by a former MySpace.com chairman in 2006 and it has enjoyed huge growth ever since:

  • Their sites include LiveStrong.com with Lance Armstrong and many niche sites such as eHow.com for tutorials, Cracked.com for humor, GolfLink.com for golf and Trails.com for hikers.
  • They own eNom, the world’s second-largest domain registrar.
  • They provide social networking tools to brands such as Kraft, Whole Foods and Lowes.
  • Most large web companies now run a network of sites so Comscore, which ranks web traffic, judges sites according to the total traffic to all their sites. Demand Media is in the top 20.
  • They are so big that tech commentators have speculated that they will soon go public in the biggest tech IPO since Google.

DemandMedia.com is their main corporate website and it runs on Joomla:
